the architecture of architecture
largest archive of architecture video interviews
How is architecture made?
What does it take to run a successful practice?
What are the obstacles you have to face at different stages of your firm’s life?
Choosing firms of various scales, with different business approaches or styles, and by selecting a wide range of generations (30s to 80s), this series hopes to unveil the mysteries of how architecture is made around the world today, to understand the architecture of architecture.
Just like plans and sections of buildings are shared widely and publicly, it appeared timely to look at the structure of design practices. The timing for this archive is also quite special as it happens right after COVID changed the way work happens throughout the world and right before AI completely transforms creative spaces.
INTERVIEW FRAMEWORK
During each interview, the same structure of questions guides the discussion. These are articulated into four themes presented below with some examples.
-
When and where did you decide to start your practice? What prompted your choice? How did you get your first projects? What are some of the crisis you went through that helped you redefine your model?
-
How do you go about designing your projects? Do you have a specific design methodology? How are other architects involved in the process? Besdies you, who are the main people? How are you organised?
-
Which qualities have helped you get to where you are today? How did you develop them? Which traits are you looking for in the people you hire? Do you have a specific hiring process?
-
What kinds of experiences would you like people to have in your projects? How do you wish to affect their senses? What about the life of the office, what are some of the key moments you share with your staff?
-
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.
